This month Lazy River Estate had the privilege of  hosting the most deliciously informative long lunch, raising funds and awareness for Ovarian Cancer Australia. All guests wore their teal ribbon with such pride as they were educated on early signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. In most cases, ovarian cancer is not diagnosed early and detected at an advanced stage, becoming extremely challenging to treat and often fatal. 

So what is ovarian cancer? “Ovarian cancer is a disease where some of the cells in one or both ovaries start to grow abnormally and develop into cancer. Learn the signs and symptoms, stages of ovarian cancer, risk reduction and prevention” (Ovarian Cancer Australia, 2022).

Ovarian Cancer Australia, 2022 also provided the following statistics:

• Each day, five women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and three will die from the disease
• Currently, in Australia the overall five-year survival rate for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer is 48%. In comparison, the overall five-year survival rate for women diagnosed with breast cancer is 92%.
• It is estimated that 1,720 Australian women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year, and 1,042 women will die from the disease – that’s one woman every eight hours

Our event organiser, Kristina had an absolutely moving response regarding her fundraiser on Sunday 20th February 2022, raising an incredible amount of money for Ovarian Cancer Australia. Her passion and motivation drove an abundance of knowledge for all guests, so they could identify early symptoms of ovarian cancer. We hope that increasing the awareness of this deathly disease will decrease the above statistics and make a difference in early detection, and increase survival rates.
